Hunting Safety

Any time to objective of an endeavor is to kill or trap your target, the activity is inherently dangerous. In order to ensure safe sport, hunters must take extreme caution so as to avoid accidents. Every year, far too many hunters are injured or killed unnecessarily due to a lapse in what should be standard safety precautions. In addition to all local and state laws, put in place to ensure safety in specific areas across the country, there are several guidelines all hunters should regularly follow.1. Assume every gun is loaded It goes without saying, never point a gun at a fellow individual, even in a joking manner, as all weapons are subject to accidental misfire. Every firearm should be treated with the utmost respect and handled with care. The safety should remain on at all times, save for the time in which a shot is actually taken. 2.Wear bright colors In nature you won’t find an animal or vegetation with a natural bright neon orange coloring. In order to help other hunters not mistake your movement for a potential target, dressing brightly will help to easily set yourself apart from the forest. 3.Watch your finger position As a safe measure, don’t even place your finger on the trigger until you are actually in position to unload. Learning to carry your gun in a safe manner will help to guard against discharging a round downwards into your own leg or foot, a surprisingly common injury to many beginning hunters. 4.Stay in groups Hunting alone places yourself at unnecessary risk, both to animal attacks and friendly fire. Simply find a few friends, more than likely to make for an enjoyable outing anyway. If you are hunting as part of group, try not to wander out of easy sight of your group as you could easily be mistaken for a target. 5.Check the weather Don’t put yourself at risk of being stranded in a situation you are ill-equipped for. A simple forecast update can help you to either postpone your trip or pack accordingly.
